Friends Forever By Jane Hauck

We said we'd be friends forever
Nothing would ever separate us
We were so young and carefree
The whole world to us, was love.

It seems like just yesterday
That we walked the halls at high school
Laughing and talking along the way,
As we obeyed all of the rules.

Soon, high school days were over
But still, we remained best friends
By calling each other on the phone
And E-mail messages we would send.

The years passed by too quickly
But time was good to each of us
Our friendship grew even stronger
Being tied with bonds of love.

When gray hairs started coming in
We didn't let that get us down
We weren't getting older, but better
Only a few wrinkles could be found.

Then one day, quite unexpectedly,
My "forever friend" became ill
I told myself that they'd be okay,
They just needed to take their pills.

But their death came without warning
And the pain cuts my heart like steel
My grief is overwhelming,
No one could know just how I feel.

As the tears roll down my cheeks
And I think my heart will break,
There's a Friend who longs to comfort me
If I just look up I'll see His face.

Yes, Jesus knows just how I feel
And will help me find my way
He can help me face tomorrow
As He carries me through today.

You see He, too, loves my friend
They are together this very day
Right up there beyond the stars
I can almost hear them say,

"We are walking the halls of Heaven
Just like you and I used to do in school
Laughing and talking as we go
Forever friends, the rule!"
