Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his
soul from troubles
Proverbs 21:23
We are all human and there are times when we will
become angry and agitated by others. While we can’t always control
the circumstances, we can control ourselves. Emotions are wonderful,
and they certainly cause us to enjoy life to the fullest, but when
they are uncontrolled, they can cause us, as well as those surrounding
us, turmoil and heartache. Reacting immediately may make us feel
better at the moment, but in the long term we could avoid many of our
troubles by holding our tongue. Contrary to the old saying “sticks
and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me”, our
words do inflict a great deal of pain that runs deep, and too often
lasts a lifetime. Bones heal, but words are echoed over and over in
our minds like a recording. Once we react to a situation, or say
something out of anger, it cannot be taken back. Sure our anger
passes, but what it leaves behind does not.
Prayer
Give us wisdom and the strength to control our
emotions, and the words that come from our mouths. Let our words
declare Your righteousness, and speak and sing praises to Your name.
Forgive us for the times we have hurt one another with our
uncontrolled anger and words. Heal hearts and minds and restore broken
relationships, in Jesus name we ask. Amen.
