Now I
beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences
contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they
that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and
by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Romans 16:17-18
The words of men will fail us. They can be beautifully compiled and
appear sensible and wise, yet if they are contrary to God’s word, they
will not only fail, but can deceive the hearts of those who embrace
them. It is not the words of men that we embrace, but God’s. There are
many today, even within the confines of the Church, who are calling good
evil and evil good. Their words contain portions of the truth, but they
know not the truth. The truth is Jesus Christ. When His Spirit dwells
within us, it springs forth from our words and deeds. It gives us our
portion and is life sustaining. Even though their hearts may be well
meaning, their passions are misguided. We are no longer orphans; we know
our Father; we recognize His voice, and will certainly not follow after
another, regardless of their position or status.
Prayer
Lord, deposit Your word deep within my heart, I receive it with great
joy. Let it become rooted and grounded deep inside so that it is a part
of all that I am. Give me the wisdom to continue to hear and follow Your
voice so that no other voice is able to uproot or choke out the word You
have planted. I thank You for the men and women You have raised up to
teach us, yet it is Your word that I embrace and follow. Amen.
