The Day Baby Jesus Smiled

It was a cold December afternoon. Quietly upstairs, in her room, Sara could hear, from her window, the busyness outside. Sara lived across the street from the church she had always attended and ran to the window to see what was going on. She saw the pastor arranging the Christmas Nativity scene across the church lawn. Sara loved this time of year, every Christmas, she would sit for hours, looking out her window at the nativity scene. She loved hearing about Jesus, and how He had been born in a manger. She would often think about Him, and all the bible stories she had been taught, and how much He loved everyone. She would often sneak across the street just to sit close to the baby Jesus in the manger. As she watched from the window, every piece in place, it was so beautiful and touched her heart so deeply, a tear fell down her cheek. Sara didn't quiet understand, why was she crying, she wasn't sad at all . As she sat there in her window, looking out at the nativity scene, her thoughts were flooded with all the stories from years past, of Jesus and His love, His gift of salvation, the greatest Christmas present ever given, she had once heard her pastor say, she didn't know how long she sat there, but she knew her heart was across the street, in the cradle that lay in the manger. Quietly, she said, "Dear Jesus, I want to give you a Christmas present too." She thought and thought, and then she sat down at her the table, she took out a piece of red paper and a pen. She gently cut out a heart shape from the paper and with the pen she wrote, "the only thing I have to give you Dear Jesus is my heart." She ran downstairs, out the door and across the street. As she got to the nativity scene, she gently laid her heart in the cradle with Baby Jesus, and said, "Merry Christmas Jesus, I give you my heart." Tears flooding her eyes, and joy flooding her heart, she looked once more in the cradle and could not believe her eyes, Baby Jesus smiled. The love that she had always heard about was real and she knew that she would never be the same.
